March 23, 1931: Bhagat Singh and two of his associates were sentenced to death at the Lahore Central Jail in Lahore conspiracy case.
On 17 March 1931, the Home Secretary, Punjab, sent a telegram to the Home Department, New Delhi, fixing the execution on 23 March 1931 despite the decision of March 24, 1931. It was probably for the first time, that executions were carried out in the evening, by advancing the date of execution.
Bhagat Sing wanted to change the structure of society radically. In a brief essay on the slogan ‘Long live the revolution,’ he writes: “The sense in which the word revolution is used in this phrase is the spirit, the longing for a change for the better. The people generally get accustomed to the established order of things and begin to tremble at the very idea of change. It is this lethargic spirit that needs to be replaced with the revolutionary spirit.”
During the discussion of the Bill in the Assembly, Mr. Jinnah strongly opposed it and made a stirring speech on 12 and 14 September 1929. Mr. Jinnah quoted a number of British and foreign precedents and said:
"I say that no judge who has got an iota of a judicial mind or a sense of justice can ever be a party to a trial of that character and pass sentence of death without a shudder and a pang of conscience. This is the farce which you propose to enact under this procedure. I say this, that if ever there was a conscientious judge and he was strong enough, if he had a judicial mind, and if he had any independence, let me tell you, that in spite of the provision of yours, he would say, “True, the law has to be administered; I am obliged to make the order that the trial shall proceed ex parte; but I realize and I feel that it will be a travesty of justice and I cannot be a party to it; and I shall, therefore, adjourn this case until further orders."
Bodies of Bhagat Singh,Rajguru and Sukhdevd were taken to Ganda Singh wala near District Kasur from the back gate of Lahore central jail after execution and half burnt in the name of cremation. However it were large number of people led by Lala Lajpat Rai's daughter Parvati Devi and Bibi Amark kaur sister of Bhagat Singh, that took way the half burnt body pieces of martyrs back to Lahore and all three were properly cremated at bank of river Ravi at Lahore with 40 thousand strong procession of people.
